Long Distance Relationship Survival Tips

For many people, choosing to study at university iinvolves moving away from home. In some cases this can be across the other side of the country, or even the other side of the world! Under such circumstances relationships can become extremely difficult to maintain, but this does not have to be the end. With a little thought and dedication, long distance relationships can make the heart grow fonder, meaning that when your studies are over and you return back to your partner, your relationship will be better than ever.

If you are embarking on a university course away from home and leaving your loved one in a far away location, here are some tips to help keep your relationship alive.

Utilise Modern Technology Let’s face it, you have got it much easier than people in your parents’ generation as thanks to modern technology there are loads of ways to bridge the physical gap between you and your partner. With mobiles, Facebook, Skype, and a whole host of other programs, you are able to talk and see each other every single day if you wish. According to some relationship studies, it is estimated that there are over 3 million married couples engaged in long distance relationships, and most of them are getting through it in a large part to the invention of the internet and video calling.

Dealing with Loneliness Even if you keep in regular contact via phone and internet, one of the biggest struggles facing any long distance relationship is the physical separation and the feelings of uncertainty and loneliness that come with it. There is nothing more frustrating than speaking to someone on the phone but knowing that you will not get to see them for a long time, and for some people it becomes a  roller coaster of emotions that can be difficult to deal with. The worst thing you can do in this situation is to become reclusive and sit at home waiting for the next phone call. You need to make sure that both of you are living active and fulfilled lifestyles. Whilst you may be extremely busy with your studies, and university life, your partner should ensure that they are filling up as much of their time as possible visiting friends and family, and getting involved with social events. Even if it is not what they feel like doing, it will pay dividends in the end!

Keep the Romance Alive One thing that is vital for the long term success of a relationship is romance. Being separated by a long distance actually provides you with many opportunities for surprise romantic gestures, and this can make all the difference to the way in which your partner feels. There are so many great ideas that you can use to get your partners heart racing, from a traditional heartfelt hand written letter, to a self recorded rendition of ‘your song’ posted on YouTube. One of the most romantic things you can do is create a scrapbook filled with photographs, drawings, love letters and even a poem if you are feeling expressive. This would make a wonderfully romantic gift, and would give your partner something nice to look at when feeling a little down.
