How to Feel at Home as an International Postgrad in the UK

Studying in a foreign country can be challenging.

Whether you're feeling a little homesick or simply want to know how to make life easier, try giving some of these tried and tested techniques from other international postgraduate students a whirl.

Learn More English We're guessing you're pretty good at English already, especially since you're reading this, but if you're not all that confident then try your hardest to learn as much English as you can. Most universities will offer English classes so don't be afraid to join in.

Bring Local Money With You Before embarking on your journey, ensure that you have some pound sterling at the ready, or at least a prepaid cash card that is fully loaded. Keep in mind that most buses won't accept anything larger than a £5 and UK shops will not accept £50 notes.

Buy A Coat The UK weather is unpredictable to say the least. Winter is cold, really cold! As well as a nice warm coat, it will also be worth investing in some thick jumpers, hats, gloves and scarves.

Get a UK Phone From day one you'll want to have a UK phone. It will cost you a lot less to keep in touch with new friends from university. As for calling friends and family back home...

Use Skype Skype has revolutionized international communication. With free calls anywhere in the world that has an internet connection, you'd be mad not to take advantage of it.

Open a Bank Account A UK bank account will enable you to pay rent and bills easily and quickly. As an international student, you won't be entitled to all the fancy free gifts and overdrafts, but you can still open a basic bank account that will allow you to make payments and get money from cash machines.

Register with a UK Doctor Nearly all UK universities have an on-campus GP that can take the place of your doctor for any minor ailments whilst you're away from home.

NHS Direct also offer medical advice and have an invaluable symptom checker.

Seek Advice Other students will have plenty advice that they are willing to share. All you have to do is ask! From the cheapest place to shop, to which bank to open an account with, if you're not 100% sure about something just ask.

Get Involved Fresher's week is the time when you will meet people that might end up being your friends for life. Engaging in social activities is a   great opportunity to get to know your peers. So kick back and relax.

Smile Last but not least, smile. Smile as much as possible. You'll be amazed at the results!
