Getting Through University: Advice from Graduates

There is no better advice than that given from those who have been there and done it before, so we have been in touch with some graduates who have shared their advice on getting through university without a hitch:

Utilize Your Resources

Your university will provide you with all of the necessary postgraduate resources to pass your course, but a large percentage of students fail to utilize these to a large extent. Firstly, you should ensure that you attend everything, meaning all lectures, seminars, private tuition classes, and anything else that is laid on for you. Some courses even give a small amount of marks for attendance, so you'd be silly to miss out on these. It is much easier to learn at these sessions than to miss them and try to catch up later.

Use a Reference Guide

One of the easiest ways to drop marks on your assignments is by not using correct citations, references, and layout, and this is just bad form. Buy a reference guide and use it every time, there is no need to drop marks for laziness.

Communicate with Your Teachers

Getting feedback from your tutors on essays and assignments you have completed is important if you really want to improve in the future. Also, if you have questions about work, or are struggling to understand concepts and ideas, then make time to speak with your tutors as they will be able to help you. A lot of people do not like to ask, but never forget that you are paying for their time and expertise, so don’t be afraid to speak to them or raise issues.

Manage Your Time Effectively

This is different from ‘work all the time’ as it simply means plan out your time so that you will get the most out of your week. If you know that it is unrealistic for you to complete loads of work on certain nights or on the weekend due to social activities, simply make a schedule that allows for this time off but makes up for it on other days. It is a good idea to give extra time for internet browsing and other things which are inevitable during your time on the web. If you do not allow for these things in your schedule, you will constantly be trying to catch up with yourself.

Utilize Google Scholar

Google Scholar is something that you should be using for every assignment as it connects you directly with good quality references and papers that you can use to support your work. Citing quality references will go a long way during your postgraduate degree, and this is the perfect platform to get those. Ordinary search engine searches can lead you on a merry chase to some very dubious articles from non academic sources .
