Can a Smartphone Help Your Postgrad Degree?

When studying for your postgraduate degree, any help is welcome and a smartphone can be an indispensable tool for any student. Below we’ve listed 5 different ways in which your smartphone can make your postgraduate experience a lot easier.

Apps Galore There are literally thousands of smartphone applications, or apps, available whether you have an iPhone, an Android, Windows or Blackberry handset. Some of the best are listed here , but there are hundreds of dedicated apps which allow you to create flashcards (no more dropping or mixing up the order of your flashcards), dedicated office software (which allows you to create documents or even spreadsheets or presentations) and even apps that give you access to the cloud, so if you already have documents uploaded on the internet, you can access them on the go to tweak or update them.

Study Aids Many smartphones come with inbuilt features which can be very handy when studying. These can include inbuilt voice recorders which can be an effective way of taking notes during lectures and seminars (though get permission first!), or even just for recording your thoughts when considering how to tackle a new project.

Most smartphones now come equipped with high quality cameras which can be a really handy way of taking copies of documents (again, ensure you aren’t breaching any copyright laws first), and can be a lot quicker than tediously scanning or photocopying articles or journals.

Also, don’t forget the inbuilt note-taking software which can be linked to a calendar (great for making note of all of those assignment deadlines!).

Looking after your finances Money can often be tight when studying, so be sure to take advantage of the excellent online bank applications which can allow you to transfer or request money, as well as keep an eye on your bank balance. There are also apps out there which can help you budget your finances more effectively, so be sure to check them out.

Keeping in Touch Of course, it’s also important not to forget the primary function of a smartphone – that is, to call people! Postgraduate students often study away from home, so having a smartphone means you can keep in touch with friends and family back home, as well as using your phone to co-ordinate meet-ups and study sessions with fellow students.

Time Out Finally, don’t forget to have a break now and then! Smartphones can offer you hours of entertainment, whether it’s by listening to music (stored on your phone or streamed from the cloud), watching movies or by spending a little time on a game or two.

So there you have it. A smartphone can be a study aid, a financial advisor and even an all-round entertainment device, as well as a vital link to all of your social circles.
