A new way of ranking universities…

University rankings have now become very important to both students and academic professionals around the world, when it comes to making a decision about where to study, research or teach.

Although there are currently 33 countries that possess some form of university rankings system, it is fair to say that these can often be described as “mono-dimensional”, failing to offer a complete picture of what the university has (or hasn’t!) got to offer.

This train of thought has led the European Commission to launch the U-Multirank project - the purpose of which is to “design and test the feasibility of a Multi-dimensional Global University Ranking”.

The idea is that this project will lead to a new university ranking system which will enable European universities to be compared to one another, and aid them in their ability to compete with higher education institutions worldwide.

Jan Figel, EU Commissioner for Education, Training, Culture and Youth explained, “We are more interested in developing a ranking system that goes beyond the research performance of universities, to include elements such as teaching quality and community outreach. What we are looking at is multi-dimensional, because we want to take account of the rich diversity of our universities, so that potential students, researchers and staff can get a better picture about the respective universities.”
