Let’s take a look at some of the more unusual subjects that you could choose to study at postgraduate level.

 

MSc in Fire Safety Engineering

This is the study of the prevention and development of fire and includes different aspects of human and animal behaviour during fires. Some courses in this field have an international basis, whilst others have a more local focus, such as bush/forest fires or industrial fires, depending on the training needs of the country. MSc programs in Fire Safety Engineering are available at a selection of universities worldwide, including the University of Central Lancaster in England, the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, Western Sydney University in Australia and the University of Maryland in the USA.

MA in Puppet Arts

Including elements of design and performance, many universities offer masters programs that feature modules in puppetry and puppet design. However, there are fewer courses that focus entirely on puppetry, however the University of Connecticut in the United States does offer an MA in Puppet Arts. There is also a relevant course offered by a group of central European universities including the University of Theatre and Film Arts in Hungary and the Aleksander Zelwerowicz National Academy of Dramatic Art in Warsaw, Poland. Modules on this course include topics such as Advanced Shadow Theatre, Scriptwriting, Theatre History, and Advanced Hand Puppet Theatre.

Masters in Viticulture & Oenology

Winemaking is a huge industry in many countries and you can study a Masters in Viticulture and Oenology in lots of great places. Australia has a number of courses in this field, including the one at the University of Adelaide. There is also a course at Plumpton College, which is part of the Royal University of Agriculture in the UK. Modules include topics such as Cellar and Winery Waste Management, Fermentation Technology, Soil and Land Systems, and Plant Health.

MSc in Ethical Hacking

Masters programs in Ethical Hacking cover the ethical dilemmas of national and international cyber security. This subject area is a step to a good career path and graduates from postgraduate programs in this field are in demand from national governments and international corporations. The University of Abertay Dundee in Scotland offers an MSc in Ethical Hacking and Cyber Security. Meanwhile the Sans Technology Institute in the US has a program on Penetration Testing and Ethical Hacking, and modules include Information and Network Security Management, Engineering Resilient Systems, and Ethical Hacking.

Masters in Ecotechnology

Often combined with studies surrounding sustainable development, masters programs in Ecotechnology are interdisciplinary, covering a wide range of practical and theoretical aspects of environmentally friendly technological development. The Mid Sweden University has an international masters program in Ecotechnology and Sustainable Development that is conducted in English. Modules on this course include Technology and Society from an Environmental Perspective, Energy and Material Flow Assessments, and Instruments for Sustainable Development.
