3 Careers That Require Postgraduate Art Degrees

For many people the arts are their passion. Whether they love fine art, written arts, or one of the other means of self expression, they tend to choose further education relating to their love of the arts. Sometimes comments are made by uninformed parties that a degree in the arts is not required for any type of employment. This is simply not true as there are many options for those who have degrees or postgraduate degrees in an art discipline. The following are three careers that you may not even have considered previously, but that are excellent careers to pursue.

Art Gallery/Museum Curator If you have sought extensive education in the area of art history or the liberal arts, a job as a museum curator may be in your future. A museum curator oversees and cares for the works of art and the collections that are within a gallery. That is not where it stops as they also undertake various research projects and are quite often responsible for arranging public activities. In order to realize your dream you will need go have experience before applying for a curator position. It is for this reason that many grads and postgrads apply to museums and galleries for jobs in other capacities in order to build on their professional experiences. This is a good career path for those who love working with people but at the same time enjoy solitude, as there will be opportunities for both depending on the task at hand.

Choral or Orchestral Conductor For those who have a passion for music and like to lead, a career as a conductor may be the right fit. The conductor keeps the band or singers together and in proper time. Often times the conductor also branches of and composes or works to stylize pieces for their group to perform. You would also be responsible for song selection when there are performances. A conductor does not only lead performance bands but may direct symphonies or groups playing musical scores for ballets or theatre shows all over the world. Once you have completed your degree you will need to seek postgraduate education in either orchestral conducting, or choral conducting. This can be a very rewarding experience if you have the desire to be on a stage or in front of large audiences who will be awed by your showmanship.

Educator Teaching is an outlet that will allow you to share your passion with others. Once you have completed your degree you will need to take postgraduate studies in education if you would like to teach. With a masters degree you will be able to get a job at a high school level or below; however if you would prefer to teach at a college or university level as a lecturer or researcher you will need a doctorate. Choosing to be a teacher will allow you to continue practicing and interacting in situations centred on the arts. You will also be in a role that will allow you to inspire others to follow their own dreams to a career in the arts.

The arts are very broad and encompass many different careers. It is a good idea to have an idea of the path that you hope to follow prior to beginning a degree program. If you are well informed you will know in the beginning what degree you will require and at what level. You will also learn of any experience requirements and postgraduate education you may need in order to follow your dreams. For some of the careers listed above, it is either a recommendation or mandatory that you have experience in the discipline or have worked in the area of specialization for a period of time.
