10 Movies All About University Life

Can't quite remember what university life is really like, or simply looking for a way to get back into the swing of things?

The Great Debaters The Great Debaters is an inspirational film based on the true story of how a newly established debate team from Wiley College in Texas managed to defy all the odds and reach the national finals. With Some superb performances from Denzel Washington, Nate Parker, and Forest Whitaker, this will get you revved up and ready to join your debate team in no time.

The Graduate This 1967 classic starring Dustin Hoffman captures the feeling of uncertainty and misdirection that so many experience after graduation. The desirable young graduate becomes embroiled in a dangerous love triangle with his father’s business partner and her daughter. Many tout it as one of the best comedies ever written.

Starter for 10 Starter for 10 is a hilarious university film that follows the story of a geeky student from Bristol University as he tries to make it onto the University Challenge team. Set in 1985, against the backdrop of a Thatcher run Britain, the film investigates politics, student life, love, and friendship, with lots of great comedy moments thrown in along the way.

True Blue Following the events which took place in the 1986 Oxford vs Cambridge boat race, this fascinating film really gives an insight into the intense rivalry of one of the most famous university sporting events in the world. Although the film is a little dated, it is a great watch for all postgraduate university students.

Chariots of Fire If you are looking for an inspirational feel-good film about success and achievement, Chariots of Fire is a must. This 1981 film follows the real-life story of two Cambridge University students as they compete in the 1924 Olympics. Despite the drive and determination of both athletes being completely different, they unite in order to achieve their goals.

Old School Although this is perhaps not the most realistic portrayal of University life for most us, it is a classic film and one that is guaranteed to become a firm favourite. It is the story of a group of people of all shapes and sizes taking on the college fraternity system in order to become recognised and accepted.

Good Will Hunting Even after all the epic movies Matt Damon has graced our screens with, Good Will Hunting is still one of the defining films of his career. This intelligent and heart warming film follows the life of a university janitor whose mathematical genius is discovered by a uni professor. With some excellent performances from an all star cast, this movie makes you believe that anything is possible!

Mona Lisa Smile Mona Lisa Smile is all about girl power! Think art world, meets political constraint, meets passion. It follows a 1950s university art professor (Julia Roberts) as she struggles to turn around the ideas and actions of some of her rich and uninterested students.

Educating Rita If you are looking for inspiration for your postgraduate study, Educating Rita could be the perfect feel-good, pick-me-up film. It is not a university movie about parties and pranks, but about the drive and determination of a woman to get back into education and improve her knowledge.

An Education Driven by her father’s desire for her to get accepted into Oxford University, Jenny Mellor becomes involved with a man twice her age, as he shows her London’s high life in the 1960’s. David (the older guy) is well intentioned and wants to show Jenny what delights are out there in the real world, but as always things start to get a little more complicated.
