Develop an advanced understanding of the theory and applied practice of sport and exercise psychology to pursue a career in consultancy, education, or research, by studying for our Masters in Cambridge.

Why Sport and Exercise Psychology at ARU?

  • Develop your theoretical understanding and applied practice in Sport and Exercise Psychology.

  • Study on a course accredited by the British Psychological Society (subject to approval) and British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES), preparing you for a career as a sport psychologist.

  • Discover our high-performance specialised labs endorsed by BASES.

  • Join a university with a long-standing reputation for excellence in teaching and research.

In this Masters degree you'll gain knowledge of the practical use of psychology in sport and exercise contexts. You'll develop a critical understanding of the relationship between theoretical concepts and applied practice in the psychological factors influencing sport performance and exercise participation.

The course supports you in developing the necessary practical and professional competencies to conduct needs assessments and develop interventions to support athletes across the lifespan and taking into account cultural contexts. These skills and experiences form part of the required Stage 1 training in Sport and Exercise Psychology and prepare you optimally to start your Stage 2 training to become a registered sport psychologist.

The accreditation of this Masters degree by BASES and BPS (seeking approval in 2024) ensures that the course can support both students from a sport and exercise science or psychology background to progress towards Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration after Stage 2 completion.

Alongside applied elements, on this course you'll benefit from developing practical research skills, such as interviewing – used for clinical and research purposes – as well as statistical data analysis and data visualisation and dissemination.

For your dissertation you'll have the opportunity to independently research an area you're passionate about. You'll be supported by lecturers who are prominent researchers in the field of sport and exercise psychology, sport and exercise science, and cognitive psychology and neuroscience, and longstanding members of ARU’s world-renowned research community.
