Summary

Develop expertise in biological engineering and biomanufacturing, including engineering biology and process design. You'll gain technical, analytical and research skills to innovate in emerging areas of biotechnology relevant to the bioindustry.

Course description

The field of biological engineering is rapidly transforming the way we produce energy, food and medicine. Our course equips you with the multidisciplinary skills needed to thrive in this dynamic and expanding sector, whether your goal is a career in industry or advanced research.

You'll gain expertise at the intersection of biology, chemistry and engineering, learning how to design, optimise, and scale biomanufacturing processes. This includes understanding the principles behind the production of biopharmaceuticals, bioresources and next-generation therapeutics, as well as the technologies that make these processes efficient, sustainable and safe.

Through a mix of practical training, project-based learning and research-led teaching, you'll develop hands-on skills in bioprocessing, synthetic biology, tissue engineering and bioengineering innovation. You'll also cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving and project management abilities, preparing you to tackle complex challenges in industrial biotechnology.

You will undertake a substantial research project under the guidance of an academic supervisor, and produce original research outcomes that demonstrate your capabilities.

This course enables you to broaden your expertise and develop a truly multidisciplinary skill set, combining biology, engineering and bioprocessing. Graduates go on to successful careers in biotechnology, biopharmaceutical manufacturing and bioengineering research, contributing to innovative solutions for global challenges in health, energy and sustainable production.

During your studies, you’ll engage with a diverse set of research practitioners who work with the bioindustry. You'll get exposure to cutting-edge facilities led by experts in bio-systems engineering and bioprocessing, giving you direct access to some of the UK’s leading minds and resources.

By the end of the course, you will be fully prepared to operate at the forefront of biological engineering and bioprocessing, with the knowledge, technical skills and professional experience needed to drive innovation in various industries.

Accreditation We are accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers on behalf of the Engineering Council for the purposes of partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer.
