Summary

We are the premier Sound and Music Production Masters in the South-West. Our facilities and tutors encourage vanguard creativity underpinned by the precision of an MSc. Our Instagram has the latest Sound and Music updates. You can read about our modules further down the page, which use different facilities according to workflow:

  • Students work on music production, advanced recording and mixing techniques in our studio complex

  • Immersive and spatial audio technologies in our 22.2 speaker Soundlab

  • Composition and sound design for film and media in our Dolby Atmos dubbing theatre and workstation labs, often working with our Film and TV students.

  • Game audio in engine and middleware via Macintosh and PC labs, and collaborate with Game Design MSc students.

The course emphasises collaboration and employability in UK and international sectors and concludes with a final project that enables students to specialise in their chosen area of practice, and to develop routes into industry and employment.

For quality of teaching, our Sound and Music Production BA (Hons) course scored 93% in the National Student Survey 2023 and you’ll be studying with industry active staff, such as:

  • James Shannon, winner of the AMS Neve recording award who is currently working out of Splice Studios, previously with Pinewood, Dolby and Abbey Road (IMDB),

  • BAFTA winner Tim Land (aka Landslide),

  • Creative Producer Ben Hamid aka Hamid Al Matiq,

  • Hybrid audio and virtual production master Tom Spice,

  • Course Leader and producer Dr Philip Reeder.

We’re part of UK Music’s ‘Music Academic Partnership’, and our students meets industry guests throughout the year, who deliver insights and masterclass workshops on the latest technologies and techniques.

Our industry networks and partnerships enable students to develop the experience they need to enhance their portfolios, and step into industry.

Location and facilities

Based at leafy Park Campus in Cheltenham and ideally situated between Birmingham, Bristol, Bath, and Coventry, the course gives students the opportunity to work across our Music and Sound facilities that are amongst the finest in the South-West. These include four studio suites, a Dolby Atmos equipped dubbing theatre, music production Mac labs, VR facilities, and our flagship space, the 22.2 speaker immersive audio lab. Feel free to contact Course Leader Philip Reeder for more information.

Study Style

This is a highly practical course, and students attend workshops in our immersive audio lab, dubbing theatre, recording studios and production labs, where they are able to develop new skills and knowledge across the various subject areas. Students apply and refine their skill and understanding on a set of creative projects and carry out research into technological and commercial sectors, in order to align their work with the needs of the creative industries.

The final Sound and Music Production Project module, is an individual, supervisor-led project, where students apply their postgraduate knowledge and understanding and create a portfolio of projects that are aligned to their future professional and creative trajectories. Again, students make use of our industry standard facilities – and collaborate where appropriate with filmmakers, games designers, animators and other content producers – to create a body of work that will enable them to transition into professional practice and a sound and music production specialist.
