Those who study the Masters in Civil Engineering will gain advanced knowledge and associated analytical and problem-solving skills in a range of key sub-disciplines of Civil Engineering, and develop the ability to apply this knowledge in engineering design and to the solution of open-ended and multi-disciplinary problems. The MSc in Civil Engineering is intended for students with a first degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related discipline who wish to extend their expertise to a higher level in preparation for a professional career.

This degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) comprising of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) and the Permanent Way Institution on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the academic requirement for Further Learning for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). To hold accredited qualifications for CEng registration, candidates must also hold a Bachelor (Hons) degree that has been accredited as partially meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) - see www.jbm.org.uk for further information. It should be noted that candidates completing the MSc who hold an underpinning accredited Bachelor degree accredited for IEng only or a non-accredited bachelor degree will need to apply for an academic assessment to determine whether they will meet the educational base for CEng registration.

You will select courses from key sub-disciplines of civil engineering, notably structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, environmental engineering, computational mechanics and transportation engineering.

With all lecture courses selected from sets of options, you can choose to develop a degree of specialisation in a given sub-discipline or to remain broad-based, thus tailoring the programme to suit your interests and career aspirations.

Two major design project courses will develop your abilities to apply your knowledge of civil engineering to the design of engineering projects. One of these projects is specifically civil engineering in content. The other is multi-disciplinary in nature and will involve working in teams with MSc students from other engineering disciplines to tackle a broad-based design problem.

You will also undertake an individual project, allowing you to investigate a specific topic in considerable depth.

You will be taught by staff who are leading researchers in their fields, so that course content can reflect state-of-the-art understanding, relevant to future challenges for civil engineering industry and the profession.

| Entry requirements | 2.1 Hons (or non-UK equivalent) in Engineering discipline or Physical Sciences/Mathematics degree, with modules in each of Soil Mechanics and Structural Mechanics and Structural Design and Engineering Mathematics/Mathematics at an average grade of 2.1 or non-UK equivalent. We may sometimes accept degrees at 2.2 Hons (or non-UK equivalent) with an average grade of 2.1 or non-UK equivalent in core modules. Extensive work experience may be considered in addition to academic qualifications for those that fall just below the requirements noted above. International students with academic qualifications below those required should contact our partner institution, Glasgow International College, who offer a range of pre-Masters courses. |

The MSc Civil Engineering is accredited in the "Further Learning" category accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE), the Institute of Highway Engineers (IHE) and the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT). This means that a student with an accredited BEng undergraduate degree can take the accredited "Further Learning" MSc to top-up their academic qualifications in order to meet the full academic requirements for conferral of the title of Chartered Engineer. This is an alternative route to the 5-year undergraduate MEng route.
