Summary
Our PGCert in Independent and Supplementary Prescribing supports registered healthcare practitioners (nurses, midwives, and allied health professionals) in the UK to develop the knowledge, understanding, and skills required to practice as safe, effective, and competent independent and supplementary prescribers.
The course has been validated by the NMC and HCPC and prepares you for safe and effective prescribing practice within your competency/scope of practice and professional bodies’ authorisation and employer's consent.
During the course, you will be introduced to the general principles of pharmacology relevant to prescribing practice, the professional, legal, and ethical frameworks relevant to Independent and Supplementary prescribing, as well as the clinical governance/quality assurance aspects of prescribing.
The course team is a multidisciplinary group of clinicians and academics and is thus able to meet both the academic and clinical needs of the prescribing course. The course is divided equally between theory and practice. General pharmacological principles will be taught in a class-based situation, you will then relate these to your own practice within the workplace.
You must complete a minimum of 84 hours observing a variety of prescribing decisions supported by your practice supervisor and practice assessor.
