Summary

Discover our PGCE General Primary course with a specialist pathway in inclusion / SEND. This pathway, alongside our acclaimed General primary programme, provides you with additional specialist knowledge and expertise in the field of working with children with SEND and inclusion. Whilst preparing you for the exciting environment of the mainstream primary classroom, this pathway provides you with additional skills that will allow you to become confident in creating inclusive teaching and learning experiences. In addition, choosing this pathway can also be a step towards a career as a SENCo or a specialist SEND teacher.

Accreditation for the award of Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) for September 2025 entry is through the University of Warwick. From September 2026, all students will receive both their professional QTS qualification and their academic qualification from the University of Cumbria.

If you are an international applicant who requires a visa to study in the UK and are applying for our PGCE programmes starting on Monday 1st September 2025, the final deadline for applications is Monday 30th June 2025. This is to allow time to process your application and meet visa requirements. If your application is for PGCE Primary we may be able to consider your application for our January 2026 cohort instead. Applications for UK and Ireland based candidates remain open.

Course Overview This specialism allows you to explore ways in which all pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities, can be included in classrooms and schools. You will learn through a combination of theory, an examination of current policy and practice, including the Children and Families Act (2014) and the SEND Code of Practice 0 to 25 (2015), combined with plenty of practical experience and input from experts in the SEND field.
