If you're a nurse, physiotherapist, paramedic or other health care practitioner looking to enhance your professional development then our course provides a flexible programme in which to develop your knowledge and clinical skills. The programme is framed on the four pillars of advanced practice - clinical practice, facilitating learning, leadership and evidence, research and development.
The optimal delivery of modern health care requires a multi-disciplinary team and for members of that team to flexibly perform many tasks previously performed by particular professions and to take on the lead role. The knowledge and skills required of those undertaking such advanced roles have expanded well beyond the traditional clinical specialist skills of their profession to include leadership, clinical education, quality improvement, clinical human factors and an understanding of local and national contexts of health care and working across boundaries. This programme is studied by blended learning - a mixture of on campus and online.
This programme has been specially created for practitioners, helping you to develop the in-depth knowledge, skills and confidence to manage an episode of care for patients with complex cases within specific areas of practice. The programme focuses on the four pillars of clinical practice, facilitating learning, leadership and evidence, research and development.
The PgCert Advanced Clinical Practice is the first step towards completion of the MSc which can open up career opportunities in Advanced Practice in the healthcare arena. From next year students who have successfully completed the PgCert will be able to progress towards the PgDip (Year 2) and then the full MSc in Year 3. We have designed a programme that delivers the range of expertise and skills that are now expected of an advanced practitioner whether they are working in the acute sector or in the changing primary care and community sector. The programme offers choice and there are options for a research or more applied approach if that was desired. This programme is delivered in partnership with our NHS colleagues by senior clinicians and clinical academics from medicine and staff from PA, nursing and the allied health professions.
