Summary
The MA in Languages and Cultures Across Borders is offered by the Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies (ILCS), with modules also taught by academics from the University of London Institute in Paris, King’s College, UCL, Queen Mary and Royal Holloway, giving you access to an unparalleled breadth of expertise across methodologies, languages and subject areas. The outstanding language provision at King’s also means that you can hone your existing skills or start a new language from scratch as part of your degree, while collaboration with some of London’s most renowned museums and libraries emphasises the practical skills you will gain.
This interdisciplinary MA explores pressing issues including forced migration, post-colonialism, cultural memory and globalisation, which touch on broader themes such as human rights, anthropology, sociology and the environment. You will develop the skills needed to address issues concerning how languages and cultures function across borders, ideal for a range of careers in the NGO, development and heritage sectors. If you are looking to pursue further study, the MA also provides essential preparation for PhD study in the extended disciplinary field of Languages, Cultures and Societies.
This programme provides you with an advanced understanding of: - The movement of languages, people, practices, and artefacts over time and space;
-
The interconnected aspects of mobility and immobility, hidden legacies of enforced displacement, the enduring effects of colonialism, environmental challenges, and the impending consequences of globalisation;
-
How human communication underpins all transactions: cultural, intellectual and commercial;
-
How digital technologies are transforming means of communication;
-
The ways in which transnational, translational, and transcultural study can address how realities of the past and present are constructed, how memory operates, and how culture functions across media and material forms.
