University of Greenwich leads the way in sustainability
As a student at Greenwich, you have joined a community wanting to make a positive difference. Globally, 80% of students want their institution to do more on environment issues (NUS Skills Survey) and over 97% of Greenwich students say that sustainability is important (from 2022-23 Annual Sustainability Survey). It is therefore no surprise that our students expect to see us act on sustainability as part of their university experience.
The University of Greenwich takes sustainable responsibilities seriously and is motivated by the ability to empower change when we act together, from the smallest individual action to life changing research. In recognising our own impacts as a University, our ambitious Net Zero by 2030 strategic plan commits us to reducing our carbon footprint. We are proud to have maintained our ‘First Class Award’ in the People & Planet’s University Green League since 2012 and we are currently ranked as the 8th most sustainable institution in the UK and 86th globally in the Times Higher Education Impact (UN Sustainable Development Goal) Ranking.
Here at Greenwich, we have a reusable cup and food box loan scheme in all the Greenwich Campus cafés. Students and staff are encouraged to use their own reusable cups. We are introducing ‘Buy It, Bring It, Swap It’ – buy a cup, bring it when you order coffee and then swap it throughout the day for a clean one and save time on washing up.
We have had fully electric buses running between different campuses since 2021, which supports our continued commitment to be carbon neutral by 2030. The bus even has an electric heating and cooling system with sensors located in the passenger cabin which allows the vehicle to maintain a comfortable temperature.
