University of Aberdeen offers flexible Master of Public Health
The University of Aberdeen has a flexible Master of Public Health combining core disciplines with specialist electives and practical experience.
The University of Aberdeen’s Master of Public Health (MPH) offers a comprehensive and flexible approach to public health education, designed to meet the diverse needs of both UK and international students. This APHEA-validated programme provides the core disciplines required for professional accreditation whilst allowing students to tailor their learning through specialist elective options.
What sets this MPH apart is its flexibility in both timing and focus. Students can begin their studies in either September or January, with the September cohort emphasising research-focused careers and PhD preparation, whilst the January cohort takes a more practice-based approach aligned with community work and policy development. The programme accommodates various study patterns, offering 12-, 24-, or 36-month durations for full-time and part-time students.
The curriculum covers essential public health domains including epidemiology, statistics, health data science, global health and public health ethics. Students learn from experienced lecturers representing diverse disciplines – from psychology and sociology to economics and management – including both renowned academics and expert practitioners. This multidisciplinary approach ensures graduates develop a holistic understanding of public health challenges.
Located on the Foresterhill Health Campus, one of Europe’s largest clinical complexes, students benefit from proximity to cutting-edge medical facilities, research institutes, and the Rowett Institute. The programme maintains excellent industry links with NHS Grampian and local councils, providing real-world exposure to public health practice.
The MPH’s practical focus is evident in its project components, which can be tailored towards either professional practice or academic research. January cohort students participate in extended work-based placements, whilst all students engage with real-life research projects that influence policy and practice. This hands-on experience, combined with the programme’s strong support system – including the SUCCESS PLUS mentorship programme that achieves over 90% completion rates – prepares graduates for diverse career paths.
Career opportunities span academic research institutions, public health policy roles, independent research positions, and pathways to PhD studies. The programme’s graduates are equipped to address global health challenges, influence policy development, and contribute to evidence-based public health practice across various settings worldwide.
