UK to rejoin Erasmus in 2027

PostgradThe government has confirmed that the UK will rejoin the Erasmus Scheme from 2027.

The Erasmus Scheme allows students to study or work abroad as part of their degree, usually for between three and 12 months, while earning credits towards their qualification. It’s open to undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students, as well as recent graduates, apprentices and staff. The UK left this European Union student exchange programme six years ago as part of Brexit.

Upon rejoining Erasmus in 2027, UK students will be able to attend participating European universities as part of their degree course without paying extra fees. Similarly, European students will be able to attend participating UK universities without paying extra tuition fees, too. As part of this deal, the UK will pay £570m towards the Erasmus Scheme in the 2027/28 academic year.

In 2021, the UK replaced the Erasmus scheme with the Turing scheme, which has a more global reach. It is currently unclear whether the Turing scheme will continue to operate once the UK rejoins Erasmus.
