Online study at Falmouth University helps creatives redefine their careers
Changing careers can be challenging and exciting: you’re moving into the great unknown, and for students at Falmouth University, online study is enhancing their career prospects.
From emotional and practical hurdles – such as fear of failure, financial constraints and taking a step back in your career, to the more systemic barriers of industries requiring specific qualifications, securing a role in a new sector can feel like a pipe dream for most of us.
Falmouth University’s connections with guest speakers, innovative tutors with a wealth of current commercial expertise and industry-informed live projects really support students to break down those career barriers: and these are all delivered online.
And it works. Writing for Script & Screen MA (Online) graduate Brad Brookes pivoted from advertising into screenwriting with the help of the course, going on to win awards for his short films not long after graduating. He says, “I’d always had a love for film and TV, and I’d always dabbled in hobbyist filmmaking but didn't really imagine I’d do it as a job.”
Brad continues, “However, after breaking through in the advertising industry as a copywriter, I began to take an interest in the science of how film scripts are crafted. My wonderful wife knew I’d pretty much run my course in advertising and really encouraged me to take a leap into doing something that I really wanted to do.”
Marketing and Digital Communications MA (Online) graduate Charly Richards made a similar shift, landing a brand management role through the deepened expertise she developed on the masters course. “I started out studying photography, but as I approached my final year, and began to seriously consider my next steps, I realised I wanted to pursue a career in marketing; I’ve always been passionate about storytelling, branding, design, and psychology, and so it seemed the perfect fit”, she explains.
“I decided to join the online course at Falmouth to strengthen my knowledge and gain a qualification to support my career growth. Shortly after, I came across an opening at Jude’s Ice Cream and the rest is history!”
