How online study is helping mature students to redefine their futures
Becoming a master of your craft can be hugely rewarding and beneficial to your career prospects. It can be a challenging prospect too, particularly for people who have been out of education for a long time.
Mature students at Falmouth University go against the grain; for many learners, online study with Falmouth is helping them to get back in the game and reinvigorate their creative practices in exciting new ways.
Like Will. After a 30-year career in IT and an education in engineering, Will took the decision to enrol on Falmouth’s online MA in Photography. Overcoming self-doubt and balancing study with work, he rediscovered his creative voice.
“The first few weeks of the course were, as expected, an emotional roller-coaster, but it was comforting that all my cohort were going through the same feelings”, he told us. “Being pushed out of my comfort zone and challenged by tutors or by course materials has increased my confidence, both in my photography and beyond.
“It was uncomfortable at the time but what I achieved for my personal practice was something I could never have done without the support and structure of the course.”
Marketing & Digital Communication MA (Online) student Rachel is encountering similar dynamics of challenge and reward on her online study journey. At the age of 52, Rachel has experienced new-found excitement in online study, along with a few stumbles, and gained new knowledge and skills.
“Studying remotely, especially as a mature student, requires discipline, adaptability, and a willingness to seek help,” she explains. “But it also offers immense flexibility, a rich resource pool and the opportunity to connect with a diverse group of learners. As I continue my academic journey, I hope to inspire others to take the plunge and pursue their passions, regardless of age.”
Why Falmouth’s online degrees are different
Underpinned by award-winning learning design, Falmouth’s online masters courses are studied 100% remotely, at a time and place that suits you, so you can study around work, alongside childcare or caring commitments – or just in a way that better fits your lifestyle.
If you're looking for an alternative and more flexible route into higher education, to develop your creative practice in your own time and space, or to focus on your career development, an online master’s with Falmouth might be just what you’re looking for.
