GEMEO research at Swansea University improves weather predictions
Swansea University is using satellite imagery and environmental models to improve weather predictions.
Accurate weather predictions are vitally important to the economy, especially its transport, agriculture and health service sectors, and are required for planning cost-effective solutions to long-term climate change. Both require global information from satellites. However, the view of Earth through its atmosphere, which contains haze from desert dust, urban pollution and wildfires, challenges satellites’ ability to realistically forecast weather, climate, and air quality.
The Global Environmental Modelling and Earth Observation (GEMEO) group, led by Professor Peter North at Swansea University and funded by the European Space Agency, is using satellite imagery – an innovation developed at Swansea – to ‘see through’ Earth’s hazy atmosphere to obtain very precise measurements of surface reflectance needed for weather and climate modelling.
GEMEO has developed a widely used dataset of the Earth’s reflectance and, through its collaboration with the UK Met Office, uses this to better forecast the weather and climate.
These forecast models and datasets developed by GEMEO are used globally. The European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast (ECMWF) has used Swansea University’s datasets for climate and solar energy analysis. In the UK, the datasets have been used to significantly improve daily weather forecast and predict more realistic climate forecasts – which feed into the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
