About the University of Sunderland
The life changing University of Sunderland has 27,500 students based in campuses on the North East coast, in London and Hong Kong and at its global partnerships with learning institutions in 15 countries.
Ranked as a top 50 university in the Guardian University Guide 2023, we are proud of our long-established commitment to widening participation, our world-leading research, and public and private sector collaborations. We also have a track-record for providing quality student experiences that result in graduates who are the tomorrow-makers of our societies and economies.
Sunderland is recognised internationally as a leading university, receiving five stars for teaching, inclusiveness, employability and facilities in the QS World University Rankings 2023. The University is also one of the UK’s leading widening participation Universities and was named The Times/Sunday Times University of the Year for Social Inclusion 2021. We were shortlisted as University of the Year by the THE – Times Higher Education, and our We Care Team won the prestigious Social Mobility Project Award at the 2022 Inclusive Awards.
Sunderland is well known as ‘the friendly university’ because we genuinely care about the wellbeing of all our students. Our job is to make sure you have the best possible experience at university, and so if you need any support while you’re with us, we’ll do our very best to help you.
Postgraduate Study
You can be assured of high-quality teaching across our career-focused and professions-facing postgraduate courses, as well as access to excellent facilities, including state-of-the-art teaching and learning spaces such as the Living Lab, the nationally recognised National Glass Centre and the professionally supervised Law Clinic and Marketing Hub. Many of our courses are co-designed by employers, affiliated with professional bodies and our lecturers are closely linked to their sectors. We also offer conversion courses that enable you to embark on a new career.
Most of our postgraduate courses start in September and October, but we also have early starts from January to April.
Our Campuses
We have two outstanding campuses in Sunderland, each just a short 20-minute walk from each other and both offering a buzzing student environment.
Our City Campus houses our main support services, sports facilities at CitySpace, as well as the Murray Library, lecture halls and classroom spaces. City Campus is also home to our Art, Design and Performance facilities and our main Health, Sciences and Wellbeing provision.
The Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter's benefits from a stunning riverside location and is in reach of both the city centre and our glorious beaches. Several of our faculties are based here, including Business, Law and Tourism; Education and Society; and Technology.
Location
The North East of England has one of the most beautiful and varied landscapes in the UK. Sunderland itself is right on the dramatic North East coastline, and there are miles of beautiful sandy beaches just a ten minute walk from the University.
The North East is also one of the most affordable regions of the UK and Sunderland was named as the best place to live for the under 30s due to low living costs, high job satisfaction, and general happiness and wellbeing in the 2018 Liveability Index. Sunderland is one of the safest cities in the UK – in 2018 we were ranked 7th in the ‘The UK’s safest places to live’ survey by Compare the Market.
