Welcome to the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama
The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, known as Central, stands at the forefront of training and research in the dramatic arts. Graduate employment statistics are amongst the highest in our sector, and our research has been assessed by HEFCE as ‘World Leading’ making Central unique in the realm of drama conservatoires. With a rich history of educating and training leading performance practitioners, Central boasts celebrated actors, producers, and directors among its alumni.
Postgraduate study
We are a small specialist institution with around 300 postgraduate students. We offer a broad range of Masters programmes including, Applied Theatre, Creative Producing, Movement: Directing and Teaching and of course Acting, many of which are also available as an MFA.
The quality of teaching at Central is at an exceptional level; all lecturers are experts in their own fields and bring a wealth of industry experience, offering students a unique opportunity to gain a high-quality education, balanced with the very best industry knowledge.
Facilities
Our 244-seat Embassy Theatre, is fully equipped to industry standard and hosts many of the regular public performances at Central. Our facilities are widely regarded to be exemplary with lighting and sound studios, movement studios, rehearsal and performance spaces as well as dedicated technical workshops for costume, set design, props and scenic construction and scenic art.

We are located in quiet, leafy Hampstead just three short tube stops from central London. Our building faces the Hampstead Theatre, one of London’s key producers of new writing, who regularly offer our students discounted tickets to shows.
London is a truly exciting place to study, well connected to all major cities in the UK as well as internationally and ranked 1st in the world in the QS Best Student Cites list 2024. It's a vibrant and energetic city packed full of music venues, world famous restaurants, theatres, cinemas, galleries, museums and cultural spaces.
How to apply
Applications for Central’s postgraduate programmes are made direct to the school via our applications portal.
We use a range of tools to assess suitability for our courses. These include interviews, auditions, recorded work, and/or portfolio reviews (depending on your chosen course). Detailed instructions are emailed to you when you apply, but for general information on what to expect can be found here.
