Summary
Our MSc Applied Psychology programme is a one-year postgraduate degree for graduates who aspire to have a career in academic psychology or one of the many industries, organisations, and community settings where psychology can be applied. It is led by research-active academics working in applied fields of psychology at our Edinburgh campus.
As a postgraduate degree, MSc Applied Psychology follows on from our established, BPS Accredited undergraduate degree in BSc Psychology. It will allow you to explore key topics related to Heriot-Watt’s three important psychological research themes, including:
Cognition, Brain and Behaviour Lifespan Health and Wellbeing Work, Society and Environment During this master’s programme, you’ll deepen your knowledge of contemporary research in psychology and consider its translation and application to real-world problems and practice. You’ll understand theoretical models in psychology and be able to critically evaluate current research, the utility of its application, and its capacity to bring about valuable societal change. You’ll learn how to demonstrate capabilities for managing research or practice, including data management, and be able to conduct and disseminate research in a way that is consistent with both professional practice, knowledge translation, and the principles of research ethics. You’ll also understand how to craft impactful research by engaging effectively with a range of users and stakeholders in organisational, community, and practice settings.
Each course will equip you with highly employable expertise and skills in psychology. You’ll benefit from the industry relevance of the programme, which will set you up for life after graduation. Upon completion, you’ll be equipped with the transferable skills and qualities necessary to have a career in academic psychology or applied psychology settings.
Your learning environment
The MSc Applied Psychology programme at Heriot-Watt University has excellent research facilities such as eye trackers, driving simulators and consistent environment labs which will support your independent research projects. We have access to a range of software and training packages, and are embedded in vibrant research, community, industry and third sector external partner networks.
The degree is taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials, workshops, and applied practice, allowing you to get to know and build relationships with your peers, the teaching staff and academics, and the wider community. You will be assessed by an independent project and a range of innovative and authentic coursework assessments and you’ll receive support and feedback throughout the programme.
Customise your learning
You’ll learn from eight courses on the syllabus and design and conduct your own independent research project in applied psychology. Every course focuses on enhancing your subject-specific knowledge and your skills in the application of psychology which can then be applied to coursework and your postgraduate project. You will complete 6 core courses in applied psychology each focused on a distinct aspect of the application of psychological science and the production of impactful research. You will also be able to select one option course each semester in areas such as business, sports psychology and advanced research methods, allowing you to create your own bespoke programme of study.

| Entry requirements | A minimum of honours degree at 2:2 or non-UK equivalent in a relevant subject. Typical candidates will have a degree in Psychology, but we will also consider relevant alternative degrees (e.g., social sciences, health sciences, education or social care degrees) provided that they contain relevant psychology components. We also hope to see evidence of having undertaken an empirical research project as part of an undergraduate degree with suitable training in research design and analysis. We welcome applications from international students and accept qualifications from around the world. Please refer to the entry requirements for your country for more details. English language requirements If your first language is not English, we'll need to see evidence of your English language ability. The minimum English language requirement for entry to this programme is IELTS 6.0 (or equivalent) with no score lower than 5.5 except for writing which must be at 6.0 minimum. If you do not have IELTS 6.0, we offer a range of English language courses to help you meet the English language requirement for this programme prior to commencing your studies. |
