City, University of London
School of Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering
The School of Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering is a diverse, inclusive and multidisciplinary centre of study and research, located in the heart of London’s vibrant design community. The School is immensely proud of its record educating thousands of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) undergraduates and postgraduates, while making valuable research advances. These three disciplines are vital for progression in technology and to the overall prosperity of our nation. Today the school is home to over 1,900 undergraduate students, 600 postgraduate taught students, 300 research students, 40 research staff, 115 academic staff and 60 professional support staff. Our alumni include notable figures such as Tiff Needell, who was an original presenter of Top Gear and now hosts the sister show, Fifth Gear.
The School comprises a total of six departments:
- Civil Engineering
- Electronic & Electrical Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering & Aeronautics
- Mathematics
- Computer Science
- Library & Information Sciences
In the Department of Civil Engineering, our academics work in the fields of structural and geotechnical engineering and hydrodynamics, in partnership with leading design consultancies and building contractors (for example, Arup, Skanska, WSP, Thornton Tomasetti and Pell Frischmann).
The Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering is renowned for its expertise in developing sensors and instrumentation (particularly in the field of biomedical engineering), while Mechanical Engineering & Aeronautics has outstanding facilities for applied research and is particularly strong in the field of experimental and computational fluid dynamics. Students who study one of our MSc Air Management courses go on to work at leading companies such as British Airways, Emirates and Lufthansa.
In the Department of Mathematics, academic staff undertake fundamental research in pure and applied mathematics in the areas of representation theory, mathematical physics and mathematical biology. Graduates have gone on to work at institutions such as Google, Jaguar Landrover and JP Morgan. Academics in the Department of Computer Science work across three broad areas, researching fundamental theories, methods and technologies related to the development, assessment and verification of complex socio-technical and software-intensive systems. Graduate prospects for this department include government institutions such as the European Commission and NHS, in addition to companies such as Charles Stanley.
The Department of Library & Information Science builds on City’s long tradition of research in information science, where academics are experts in the history of information sciences, the organisation and communication of information in a digital environment. All of these courses are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP), offering the highest level of industry recognition.
