Why Students Should Consider a Masters in Hospitality

Many people do not see hospitality as a glamorous career path, and in fact 43% of people aged between 16 and 24 said that they wouldn't consider a career in it, yet it accounts for 8% of the UK economy, and provides a huge amount of jobs. The flip side of the research suggests that 57% of people would consider going into the industry, and there are plenty of good reasons why.

Job Opportunities Firstly, tourism and hospitality accounts for a huge number of jobs both in the UK and across the world, and skills learned by people heading into this sector are likely to help with lifelong employment. One thing that can be guaranteed is that this industry is not going to shrink as people need to eat and they need places to stay when they travel. Despite the recent recession, the hospitality industry actually enjoyed a time of steady growth, which highlights the resilience of the sector.

Postgraduate courses in hospitality focus mainly on hospitality management roles, and this leads on to numerous job opportunities for graduates. These jobs are not simply in hotels and restaurants but also leisure jobs such as cruise ships, amusement parks, country clubs, airports, charities and many more institutes, offering a vast array of career choices for postgraduates. The rise in worldwide tourism has already lead to an increase in the number of undergraduate courses, so those looking to get into the higher paid positions will need to get one step ahead of other applicants, and taking a master’s degree in hospitality will give them the edge.

Climbing the Corporate Ladder A management postgraduate degree in hospitality focuses on large scale national or international companies with multiple chains, not a single hotel or restaurant. This means that graduates will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to take on important roles within these huge companies, overseeing multiple establishments which operate under a larger banner company. Studying hospitality opens up a number of career path opportunities, and these can allow people to work for international companies and take on positions all over the world. Given the stability of the industry, and the projected growth figures, those investing in postgraduate courses in hospitality are effectively securing a lifelong career path in a very lucrative worldwide sector, and will have the opportunity to transfer their skills into a variety of different situations. Most graduates of these courses are able to secure a low level management position as an entry level job.
