Introducing the University of Southampton
Located in the historic city of Southampton, the University of Southampton has grown into a global institution renowned for research and teaching across several disciplines since it was founded back in 1862.
The university started life as the Hartley Institution, which has a colourful past of its own. Here the University of Southampton shares more about its humble beginnings:
“It all started with a local eccentric – Henry Robinson Hartley. Hartley was the heir to a family of Southampton wine merchants. A studious and reclusive character, he had turned his back on the family business, and when he died he left his estate to the Corporation of Southampton to promote the study and advancement of science and learning. The result was the formation of The Hartley Institution, which opened in the High Street, below the Bargate in 1862.”
Just three years after opening its doors, the Hartley Institution had some 700 students, many of which studied part time. The institution later became the Hartley College then the Hartley University College before achieving official university status as the University of Southampton in 1952.
The university now consists of six closely-connected campuses throughout the city of Southampton. You’ll also find sites in nearby Winchester, the Malaysian city of Iskandar Puteri, and Delhi in India.
