The University of Liverpool has achieved many notable milestones, both in academia and research. It was the first UK university to establish departments in oceanography, civic design and biochemistry for instance. While its alumni include nine Nobel Prize winners, including Sir Ronald Ross, the first British Nobel laureate in Medicine, and Sir Charles Sherrington, whose research laid the foundations of modern neurophysiology.

The university has contributed significantly to a diverse range of ground-breaking projects. This includes the discovery of the structure of the atom and the development of the first ever modern computer. Its reputation as a global hub for education and research hasn’t gone unnoticed, with a thriving student population, and partnerships with institutions and industries worldwide.

The University of Liverpool ranks 19th in the Complete University Guide 2025. 94% of the university’s impactful research was also deemed “outstanding” or “very considerable” by the Research Excellence Framework 2021.
