Spooky Tips for a Postgrad Halloween

Halloween

Halloween is one of the most fun holidays for students. It happens during term time, so you can enjoy it with your friends, and there’s no requirement for gifts, meaning you don’t need to spend time worrying or working out money. That said, why not go all out – the two times in your life that you get to fully enjoy Halloween are childhood and right now, so get ready for the scariest night of your life!

Look Into Local, Cultural Events Depending on where you live, you might find some really interesting local events. From ghost tours, limited openings of haunted houses, to nights in costume at a zoo or a creepy film night in a church, there are all kinds of options out there. Take a look at what you can find – they’ll often do student discounts, and you may even find your university organising some of them. Doing something creepy and fun rather than just the standard party will make it a night to remember.

Party!

Lots of student Halloween parties are just the same as your year-round fancy dress events, so why not take things further? Decorating your house for Halloween can be a great bonding experience for housemates, and it’s easy to do on the cheap so long as you’re willing to put effort in. And remember: if all else fails, put up some calendars with big red circles around your essay deadlines. Now that's terrifying…And if organising a party isn’t quite your thing, the student union will almost certainly have something prepared – and you never know, they might even have some great costume prizes going.

Costume Time Speaking of costumes, don’t go buying some expensive pre-made costume – your student budget won’t thank you for it. Instead making one from scratch is much cheaper, and can even be part of Halloween itself. There’s nothing quite as fun as getting prepared for a night out with your friends, and add in some fake blood and zombie makeup and you’ve got some great pictures to Instagram too. It’s easier than ever to learn new skills thanks to YouTube, and meeting up a few hours before to make each other look as horrifying as possible is incredibly rewarding.

Take Advantage of Your Student Schedule You might have the occasional early lecture, but it’s probably easier for you to spend time out on a weeknight than many people. Take advantage of this and put your party then – however as luck would have it this year Halloween actually falls on a Saturday. Anyway it’ll be reading week soon enough and you can recover then.

Relate It To Your Postgrad Subject Seriously, this works. If you can do something relating to your subject, you can justify it as work. This is easier for some subjects than others, but it’s definitely possible. Do a science? Figure out some cool spooky effect you can do. What about history? Well, you're only the best source of ghost stories. Psychology? It’s serial killer week. Languages? Time to go hunting for folklore others might not know. Making your revision Halloween-themed can add a nice spark to your week, and you’ll get to learn a whole bunch of things you never knew from your fellow student friends.
