From studio to site: Your career options after a Masters in Architecture

The UK is home to some of the best universities on the planet for architecture and the built environment, including world number one Bartlett School of Architecture at UCL. Whether choosing UCL or another institution to study your Masters in Architecture (MArch), knowing what’s next post-graduation is important.

The journey from studio to site can be a tough transition. Thankfully, a Masters in Architecture opens many doors that go far beyond traditional architectural practice, with postgrads valued for their spatial thinking, technical understanding, problem solving, coordination, and awareness of sustainability and regulation.

Knowing your career options early can help you focus on your studies now while considering your progression later. Here are the paths to pursue after a Masters in Architecture.

Architectural assistant

For most masters students, studying architecture at this level is just one step in a bigger plan to gain experience toward ARB/RIBA Part 3 qualification.

It’s one of the most common paths after an architectural masters, with postgraduates able to work as a Part 2 architectural assistant to help them gain vital experience and ultimately reach their goal of becoming a fully fledged, Part 3 qualified architect. Here the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) explains more about the journey:

“In the UK, the architecture profession is regulated, and you must register with the Architects Registration Board (ARB) to use the title ‘architect’. The current route to registration involves completion of three qualifications – Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3 – and two years of practical experience… After completion of these components, you can register as an architect with the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and join RIBA as a Chartered Architect.”

Gaining a Masters in Architecture will allow you to work as a Part 2 architectural assistant with a view to becoming a registered architect with further study and experience. It’s the most common and direct route to gaining this coveted status, with long term progression to senior and leadership roles also guaranteed due to the strong demand for such professionals here in the UK.

Architectural designer

Specialising in the design and development of buildings and other structures, an architectural designer plays a vital role within the built environment. This position requires creative problem solving as well as concept development and visual communication, skills that are directly nurtured by a Masters in Architecture.

BIM Coordinator

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is so much more than 3D software. It’s the process of creating and managing a digital representation of a built asset, and goes beyond geometry to include materials, specifications, costings, performance data, construction sequencing, and maintenance and ongoing operation.

As the job title suggests, a BIM coordinator manages this modelling process and associated compliance. The role is ideal for those with technical and software expertise.

Environmental design consultant

Low-carbon design and energy performance are now prerequisites of modern builds. With a UK-wide push towards net zero, the demand for specialist sustainability and environmental design knowledge isn’t going away. A fact that makes it a great fit for those with a passion for the planet who are just graduating from a Masters in Architecture.
