From Bangkok to London: my journey as an international postgraduate student

International student from Bangkok

Moving from Bangkok to London to pursue a postgraduate degree at Bayes Business School at City St George’s University of London, studying an MSc in Marketing Strategy and Innovation, was one of the biggest decisions I’ve ever made. It was exciting, but also a little intimidating. It wasn’t just about joining a new university, but stepping into a completely different environment, culture, and way of life.

The decision to study abroad came from a desire to challenge myself, gain a broader perspective, and deepen my expertise in marketing. It was important to experience how people from different backgrounds think, learn and approach problems. London stood out because of its diversity and reputation as a global education hub. Having visited the city before, I already felt a strong connection to it and could see myself living there.

Upon arrival, everything felt unfamiliar. The weather was colder, the city moved faster, and even simple things like using public transport or buying groceries required some adjustment. At the same time, there was something exciting about starting fresh. It encouraged me to become more independent and confident in handling everyday situations.

Adjusting to student life was another challenge. The academic style in the UK was quite different from what I had experienced before. There was a strong emphasis on critical thinking, discussion and independent learning. At first, speaking up or challenging ideas in class did not come naturally. Over time, however, it became easier to share perspectives and engage more actively. This shift turned out to be one of the most valuable parts of the experience.

One of the most memorable aspects of studying in London was the diversity of people. Classmates came from all over the world, and every interaction offered a new perspective. Group work became more than just completing assignments; it was an opportunity to collaborate with people who think differently. This helped me develop a more open mindset and a deeper appreciation for different viewpoints.

Living in London as a postgraduate student also played a significant role in the overall experience. The city itself was a constant source of inspiration. Exploring different neighbourhoods, visiting museums, and observing the fast-paced professional environment made learning feel continuous, even outside the classroom. It also encouraged me to reflect more deeply on my future goals and career direction.

Studying abroad was not always easy. There were moments of uncertainty and times when everything felt unfamiliar. However, those experiences helped build resilience and adaptability. Over time, it became easier to navigate new situations with confidence.

Looking back, moving to London was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. It supported my growth both academically and personally. For anyone considering postgraduate study abroad, the key is to stay open, be patient and fully embrace the journey. It may feel overwhelming at first, but it will shape you in ways that are difficult to imagine at the beginning.
