Late applications advice
Richard Swain is the Postgraduate Marketing Manager at the University of Birmingham.
Question: Is it too late to apply for a postgraduate course starting in 2025?
Answer: The short answer? No! Unlike undergraduate applications, which typically close much earlier in the year, most universities will still be accepting postgraduate applications into the summer months.
The long answer? It often depends on where you’re from, which university you’re interested in, and what subject you want to study. Some institutions don’t have a set deadline at all – you can apply right up to the start of term. However, as a general rule of thumb, applications for international students will close earlier than for UK students, due to the extra need for English language checks, applying for a visa, and so on. It’s always best to check with your chosen institution first, to make sure you give yourself enough time. Double check your chosen programme while you’re there, as well. If it’s a particularly popular and competitive course, there’s a good chance it might have a separate, earlier deadline compared to the rest of the portfolio.
If you’re someone in this position, considering postgraduate study but still haven’t applied, don’t worry. You’re definitely not alone. Over recent years, more and more students have been starting their journey later in the cycle. Of course, we would always advise applying as soon as you can, just in case things change, or your programme closes early. But as university staff, we understand that things can be uncertain in your lives. Whether it’s finances, careers, or other responsibilities, we fully appreciate that you want to feel comfortable about your future, before committing to a course.
The most likely potential drawback to applying late is that you may have missed the deadlines for certain funding opportunities. Even then though, many universities run several rounds for their postgraduate scholarships, or may award some automatically if you’re eligible, no matter how soon you apply. If you didn’t get a chance to look during the winter or the spring, the door may not be closed just yet, and if you’re lucky, there might be some money left on the table you can benefit from.
In summary, when it comes to pursuing your prospects or your passions at postgraduate level, it’s always better late than never. As long as you do your research, and go into the process fully prepared, time could still be on your side.
