York – Student City Guide
Once the capital of Roman Britain, the city of York is a piece of living history as well as a popular haunt for postgraduate students looking to get ahead at a top UK university. Home to the Shambles, one of the oldest and best preserved medieval streets in Europe; equally well preserved (and one of the longest) city walls, and one of the world’s largest cathedrals, York is a fascinating place to spend time. But, outside of the regular tourist traps, what’s it really like to live as a local when studying here?
Your accommodation in York
Whether moving from elsewhere in the UK or relocating from a little further afield, settling in any new place can be daunting. Thanks to York’s diverse property market and accommodation options however, you are certain to find a home away from home either in or around the city centre.
As a tourist hotspot, it should come as no surprise that York isn’t a cheap place to live, especially on a student budget! In fact, according to The Press, York ranks as the eighth most expensive city in the country for students to rent. It is important to note however that housing costs vary depending on the location of your student accommodation, your overall lifestyle, and the type of student housing you opt for.
In recent years, rental prices for student accommodation in York have increased by 27% on average, with the highest rental increase 42% in certain areas of the city.
Other monthly student expenses
Housing costs aren’t your only expense when completing your postgraduate program in York. You’ll need to foot the bill for several other costs, including food, toiletries, household essentials, clothes, course materials (such as books and stationery), leisure costs, and mobile phone.
There are also hidden costs of studying postgraduate that many people overlook, and this expenditure goes beyond tuition fees and general living expenses. Be sure to budget for societies and clubs, travel, printing and photocopying costs, and even graduation – cap and gown rental isn’t cheap!
Working in York as a PG student
Many postgraduate students choose to find a part time job to earn the extra money they need to fund their life in York. For international students looking to work – either on a part-time, temporary or voluntary basis – being clear on the rules and restrictions is vital. The University of York offers some essential advice for working in the UK during your studies:
“If you are on a course of six months or longer, you are entitled to work (paid and unpaid) during your studies, as long as the wording on your visa (visa vignette and/or BRP) does not prohibit it. Contact an Immigration Adviser if this does not appear on your visa. If your visa allows you to work, you must abide by the hour limit written on your visa. Not all types of work are permitted, including self-employment and freelance work…”
Exploring the REAL York
If you’re living, working or studying in York and looking for budget-friendly ways to spend your free time, there are plenty of activities that locals enjoy without breaking the bank. Take a scenic walk or cycle along the River Ouse or through Rowntree Park, it’s a great spot for relaxing, reading or playing sports.
York’s libraries also offer free book rentals, relaxing study spaces, and even events like poetry readings. If you love history, make time to visit the beautiful ruins of St Mary’s Abbey in the Museum Gardens, which is completely free.
The city has a particularly vibrant live music and arts scene. Many venues host free or low-cost gigs featuring local bands and rising stars. We’d also recommend joining student societies or local clubs, whether it’s for sports, board games or book clubs, they’re great ways to stay active and social without busting your student budget.
