Top tips for splitting rent and bills in your student pad – without the drama!

With the average student’s living costs around £1,104 per month according to Save the Student’s latest annual National Student Money Survey, house shares offer a great way to keep essential costs like rent and bills affordable. A shared student pad is a fantastic choice for postgraduates too, with the benefits going beyond the financial as Pickard Properties explains:

“In shared student accommodation, you share day-to-day life. Cooking dinner, cramming for exams, or relaxing in the kitchen after a long day – all these moments help to build strong connections. Many of our student tenants say their housemates become their second family. You’re also likely to meet people from different backgrounds, courses, and cultures. This broadens your social circle in a way that solo living can’t match.”

A supportive study environment, a chance to make friends, simplified day-to-day living and lower costs pursuing your postgraduate ambitions, what’s not to love? The practicalities of splitting the rent and bills however can be a lot more difficult to negotiate. Discover our top tips for doing just that – minus the awkwardness or drama!

Talk it out first

Clear communication is the key to happiness and healthy partnerships with the housemates in your student pad. Start off on the right foot by arranging a get-together to talk all things finance.

During this meeting, there are a few things that need to be set in stone. This includes who will be the bill holder for services like Wi-Fi and utilities. Some people choose to share the responsibility and have one housemate as the bill holder per service. Others find it simpler to nominate a single individual who will be the bill holder for everything.

You should also set some ground rules for shared expenses and outgoings that are classed as personal expenditure. By being clear from the outset, you can make sure bills are paid on time, keep your shared student pad operating smoothly, and prevent unnecessary disagreements.

It’s recommended that you agree on fixed dates for the payment of all of your bills and rent at this stage too. This way it’s clear to everyone when they need to transfer their share each month.

Keep things clear

Don’t let all that groundwork go to waste. Keep those lines of communication open by setting up a dedicated group chat that’s reserved for talk about money, bills and rent only. You can share copies of any bill confirmations or receipts here too to make sure everyone in your postgraduate student accommodation is kept in the loop.

Join forces

Setting up a joint bank account that you only use to pay shared costs is another must that will make splitting and settling those bills simpler. As well as each housemate transferring the agreed amount into this shared account each month, bills can be paid from here to keep shared finances completely separate from each individual’s personal expenses.

Payments can be automated by direct debit or standing order at both ends to make sure rent and bills are paid on time every time, and that late fees are avoided.

Pay like a local

For international students, there are extra hurdles to jump. Exchange rate confusion is a very real problem, but you can avoid this by splitting and settling bills in the local currency. Don’t forget, you may incur extra costs for currency conversion.

Wise and Revolut are great services that are well known for their cheaper conversion rates, and free movement of funds between countries and currencies.

Build a buffer

Unexpected costs crop up, even in the most meticulously planned budget. That’s why we’d recommend setting up a house fund that everyone can chip a small amount of money into to cover any unforeseen, shared expenses. You can do this upfront, with just £20 per person being a good figure to contribute for a healthy buffer.

There’s an app for that

Take the hard work and confusion out of splitting costs by downloading SplitwiseSplittr or Tricount. These apps make light work of dividing group expenses as well as tracking shared incomings and outgoings. They even convert currencies and send helpful reminders.
