Postgraduate courses starting in January: where you can still apply

With the new year just around the corner, many people are considering their next set of goals. Whether it’s hitting higher in your career or expanding your knowledge in an area you are truly passionate about, postgraduate study could certainly be on the cards.

Thankfully, it’s not too late to apply for your place. Excitingly, several universities across the UK offer January intake, including the following…

The University of Birmingham

The University of Birmingham has several postgraduate taught (MSc/MA) courses with January starts. This includes programs in computer science, finance and law.

Applications for their prestigious MSc in International Business are also open for January 2026, with the program’s valuable industry connections and pathway-to-practice approach just some of the reasons why it’s a top course for postgrads as the University of Birmingham explains:

The University of Liverpool

With its range of postgraduate taught courses and flexible online study opportunities, it should come as no surprise that the University of Liverpool makes this list. From allied health professions and nursing to business, computer science and engineering, the university provides various options for those looking to embrace postgraduate study in the new year.

It is important to note that while deadlines for UK and Republic of Ireland applicants tend to be in early January, deadlines for international applicants are much sooner. Queen Mary, University of London (QMUL)

For a January start at Queen Mary, University of London, you’ll find lots of different options spanning several disciplines, plus support with finance and accommodation at short notice. Their Global Talent Scholarship, worth £5,000, is available for January 2026 intake for eligible students on selected programs for example.

QMUL programs with January 2026 start dates include but are not limited to MSc in Management (also available with integrated pre-masters); MSc in Banking and Finance; LLM in Intellectual Property Law; PGCert in Technology, Media and Telecommunications Law Online; MRes in Clinical Research; and PGDip in Critical Care.

Coventry University

With January start postgraduate courses available across a long list of subject areas, Coventry University is popular with prospective students who missed September intake. Deadlines for most of these courses are around mid-January, with an additional requirement of a 6.5 IELTS score or above applicable to international applicants. Scholarships and other support options are also accessible for students interested in January intake.

University of East London (UEL)

Some of the University of East London’s postgraduate courses begin in January. They also offer May intake for those who have missed the deadlines for their desired postgraduate course, with the UEL’s School of Architecture, Computing and Engineering; School of Health, Sport and Bioscience; and Royal Docks School of Business and Law offering various programs at this time of year.
