Are postgraduate diplomas (PGDip) the same as postgraduate certificates (PGCert)?

With specialised knowledge and expertise, career advancement and increased earning potential all part and parcel of the successful completion of a postgraduate program, it’s safe to say pursuing this qualification opens plenty of doors. When searching for the perfect postgraduate course to reap all these rewards however, you may be surprised to find that the options available are equally as bountiful!

Beyond Master of Science (MSc), Master of Arts (MA) and Master of Research (MRes) courses, you’ll discover postgraduate diplomas (PGDip) and postgraduate certificates (PGCert). But, how do PGDip and PGCert programs differ?

PGDip courses are longer

One of the main differences between a postgraduate certificate and a postgraduate diploma is the length of study required to complete the syllabus. PGCert programs tend to be shorter in duration, with courses typically lasting three to six months when studied full time.

A PGDip is studied for six months to a year full time. We’ll let The University of Edinburgh explain the duration to expect when studying the same syllabus part time:

“Most PgDip qualifications take two years (24 months) to complete by online part-time study. However, this can vary for some programmes, so you should always check the ‘Programme Structure’ section of the programme’s degree finder page. You can also study a PgDip more flexibly through part-time intermittent study. Most PgDip qualifications take four years through intermittent study.”

You’ll need less credits for a PGCert

With the shorter course duration comes fewer modules to contend with when undertaking a PGCert. Postgraduate certificates generally require 60 credits as a result. A PGDip covers more content and coursework, hence the longer duration and the required 120 credits. In comparison, a full masters degree typically requires 180 credits.

The PGDip is more comprehensive

The PGCert is great for providing all the essentials of your chosen subject matter or profession. It’s what makes it suitable for foundational knowledge and professional development. With the opportunity to build on this knowledge, you have the best possible start in a subject area you are passionate about. The PGCert is often a stepping stone to a PGDip or masters degree if you choose to continue your studies later down the line.

The PGDip goes further, providing a more comprehensive and in-depth exploration. With this, most postgraduate diplomas include additional assessment and practical application. You can also choose to progress directly to masters level, with a dissertation all that’s needed to convert your PGDip into a full masters degree.

Is a PGDip or PGCert right for you?

The answer to this question all depends on your ambitions. The PGCert tends to be the ideal next step for professionals seeking specific knowledge or skills without committing to a long, drawn-out course. Whereas the PGDip is a great option for those wanting advanced knowledge but not needing or wanting to complete a full masters.
