University of Derby gets Physical Activity Excellence Award
The University of Derby has been presented with a Physical Activity Excellence Award by the UK’s national governing body for university sport.
The British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) award is currently held by just 17 UK universities and has been presented to the University of Derby’s in recognition of its outstanding contribution towards encouraging physical activity in the university sector and its commitment to providing an inclusive sporting program.
Speaking about this achievement, Ollie Shearer, Director of Campus Life and Student Living at the University of Derby, says, “We are incredibly proud to achieve this award, which recognises the Sport and Physical Activity team’s hard work and collaborative approach to improving access to physical activity and sport for everyone at the University.”
He continues, “This award sets the standard for universities, and I’d like to thank every member of the team and wider university community who has made this possible.”
The University of Derby offers a wide range of sporting activities for all abilities, with its sport and gym facilities at the Kedleston Road site open to staff, students and the local community. Sports on offer include a climbing wall, squash and tennis courts, fitness studios and a fully equipped gym.
As well as providing excellent sporting facilities, the University of Derby also conducts sector-leading sport and exercise-related research – rated as ‘internationally excellent’ in the most recent Research Excellence Framework. This academic expertise is reflected in the wide range of sport-related courses available to study at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, including Sport Management, Sport Coaching and Development, and Clinical Exercise Science.
