American Fulbright researchers add to international scholarship at Sussex

Three American scholars have received prestigious US-UK Fulbright scholarships to conduct research at the University of Sussex. Hilary King, Taylor Spears and Robin Kolodny have all been named as recipients of highly-competitive Fulbright Awards and will spend the coming academic year in Brighton.

Distinguished political scientist Dr Robin Kolodny, will be visiting from Temple University in Philadelphia. She is an expert in American politics and, in particular, election campaigns. Her arrival at Sussex at the climax of the American presidential contest will add to campus wide conversation on American-British political relations.

Ms King and Mr Spears are both recipients of Fulbright Traditional Postgraduate Awards and will study, respectively, in the University's Anthropology department and SPRU — the Science and Technology Policy Research Unit.

Ms King is very much looking forward to her time at Sussex and believes it to be the best place for her to develop empowering and community-based social development programmes. A spokesperson for the US-UK Fulbright Commission said: '[Hilary] believes Sussex provides an unparalleled environment for discourse and engagement on developmental issues.'

Mr Spears, an economics and mathematics scholar, will use his time at SPRU to study the business dynmaics of European patent law and hopes to pursue a career with the US Chamber of Commerce.

The US-UK Fulbright Commission was created by treaty between the US and UK governments in the aftermath of the Second World War to promote peace and understanding through educational exchanges. More information about the Commission and Fulbright awards can be found at: www.fulbright.co.uk
