Summary

This unique programme will give you the opportunity to explore the use of the arts and cultural approaches to local and global development challenges. The course examines the impact of arts and culture in a range of contexts in ‘advanced’ and ‘developing’ countries, including post-communist societies, religious republics and conflict zones, and in small-scale local economies. The course is informed by the activities of international development bodies such as UNESCO, the UNDP, and the European Union.

You will consider the rights and wrongs of using arts and culture within such contexts and explore how they can be used to further social justice as well as economic growth. You will develop your vocational direction and capacity for active involvement in development projects.

Assessment

The course is assessed through coursework rather than formal examinations. Assessment strategies are designed to test the widest range of skills. Written assignments come in a variety of forms: essays, case studies, evaluations, reports, proposals, portfolios and business plans. These are complemented by group presentations and tasks, team building exercises, and creative and practical projects. The culminating assessment of the Major Project represents a significant body of research and writing on a topic of your choice supervised by an experienced researcher.
