Build up a set of statistical tools and techniques that you can use to solve problems in a range of industries. You'll develop the skills and knowledge a professional statistician needs.
**Course description**
This course will teach you the theories behind a variety of statistical techniques, and how to apply them in scenarios that professional statisticians face every day.
You’ll develop a detailed working knowledge of important statistical techniques and concepts, including linear and generalised linear modelling, Bayesian statistics, time series and machine learning. You’ll learn how to analyse and draw meaningful conclusions from data, and develop your programming skills using the statistical computing software R.
This course also includes modules on how to collect data and design experiments, and the role of statistics in clinical trials.
Around one-third of the course is devoted to your dissertation. This may focus on investigating a data set, or a more theoretical or methodological topic. The aim is to give you skills to include on your CV, such as planning and researching a project, data acquisition, problem specification, analysis and reporting your findings.
Dissertation topics are often provided by external clients – for example, pharmaceutical companies or sports modelling organisations. Distance learning students often come with projects designed by their employer.

Summary
This part-time distance learning programme is designed for graduates who don't have all the background knowledge for a masters degree in statistics. Students who perform well can progress on to our Statistics MSc or Statistics with Medical Applications MSc.
**Course description**
This nine-month part-time distance learning course covers the relevant first-year undergraduate mathematics, and the relevant first and second-year probability and statistical theory. It runs from late September until early June. Exams are online, so you won't need to visit Sheffield.
There are three modules and you'll either be given directed reading from standard textbooks or a fully comprehensive set of course notes, depending on the module, as well as examples and exercises to work through. Tailored course material will also be made available online including additional notes and video lectures.
Our lecturers will give you feedback and comments on your work and each module has an online forum for discussions. You'll need to dedicate around 20 hours a week to your studies.
**Progression**
An average final mark of approximately 65 per cent on the Graduate Certificate, with at least 60 per cent in each of the three modules, will usually allow you to progress onto the MSc Statistics or MSc Statistics with Medical Applications, provided you meet the University's English language requirements.
