Summary

The MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages [TESOL] will enable you to develop a strong foundation of knowledge about teaching English, as well as skills for classroom practice. You will be introduced to important theories about language teaching and learning, and links between theory and practice are continually emphasised throughout the course.

This postgraduate course provides a unique opportunity for students to enter the field of TESOL without having had prior teaching experience. There are five modules in total, which together enable you to experience varied and innovative perspectives of TESOL. You will learn about methods and approaches to teaching, and also focus on practical techniques as well as develop reflective and observational skills. There is a strong focus on developing your language awareness by exploring grammatical, lexical and phonological aspects of language as well as features of discourse. You will also learn about the principles of testing and research methods and be engaged in professional development activities. The course therefore enables you to develop the reflective and analytical skills you need to become a professional in the field.

There is the opportunity for eligible candidates to gain recognised external qualifications at the end of the course.

We also offer an extra ‘Professional Placement’ module which enables you to experience professional practices associated with work in the field of TESOL. This is a great opportunity to gain experience and to enhance your C.V. Professional placements are normally between 24-40 weeks
