Study type Taught

Are you looking to further your career in the sport development and physical activity industry? Southampton Solent’s Sport Development and Management master’s programme will help equip you with the knowledge and critical thinking skills to synthesise theories and research to become a successful evidence informed practitioner.

The course curriculum uses engaging methods of teaching, such as learning through case studies so students learn to apply theories and research to relevant practice. Students are involved in critically evaluating practice and are supported through their engagement with formative assessments which help to assess their knowledge and understanding.

The core units encourage students to critically apply theories, concepts and frameworks in sport development and sport policy, as well as analyse key approaches to monitoring and evaluation for sport. Students engage in debates and critical evaluation of the local, national and international context of sport and health and explore the role of sport in addressing broader social change outcomes, along with the role of physical activity in public health agendas.

Students are also able to tailor the course towards their own specific career ambitions with optional units allowing them to focus on key specialisms such as sport marketing, media and youth sport.

Research led teaching is embedded at Solent and is a key element of the course curriculum on this master’s programme. Students are expected to contribute to knowledge within the discipline through engaging in a research project and writing a research paper.
