The Master of Research or MRes degree is a flexible project based programme supported through an academic tutorial system and a taught research methods framework. It reflects an underpinning commitment to intellectually rigorous masters level programmes and to the development of the University's applied research portfolio and deeper links with related professions. The MRes degree provides the opportunity for practitioners from a range of professional backgrounds to gain a critical appreciation of issues leading to changes and challenges in their profession and to enhance the analytical and research skills necessary to respond effectively to such change.

MRes Communication Disorders is for clinical and educational professionals who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of communication disorders in different contexts for example, children with developmental speech and language disorders. MRes English Literature You can delve into any genre developing a critical appreciation of Higher Education delivery and research. MRes Journalism This carefully designed course allows you to specialise in a chosen subject, be it sport, fashion, science, music or politics, and build a portfolio of work. We couple this with a built in work experience module at a media outlet to practice your professional skills and make you more employable in the media industry. MRes Outdoor Education or Outdoor Learning Explore your passion for outdoor education ; undertake three supervised projects based on your professional interests and study remotely or amidst the stunning surrounds of Plymouth. MRes Social Science Develop your research and independent study skills and further explore issues of social science which are of most interest and relevance to your future career for example SEND, Criminology, Social Policy, Education, Sociology and Psychology. MRes Sport and Exercise Medicine in the only British Association of Sport and Exercise Sciences (BASES) accredited laboratory in the South West. MRes Sport and Exercise Science enables students to progress careers in sport science through a critical appreciation of contemporary issues. MRes Sport and Health Science focuses on supervised projects to offer you a flexible, stimulating route to a career in sport science; a responsive approach helps students to explore current issues. MRes Sport Development is a work-centred course with supervised projects which develop new skills tied to your professional ambitions, with access to world-class sports facilities. MRes Sport Management enables students to progress careers in sport management through a critical appreciation of contemporary issues any by developing skills to manage changes.

Each MRes degree focuses, through a flexible and clearly structured set of three supervised projects, on key themes, which contribute to the development of a critical understanding of the chosen specialist area. The precise title and scope of each project is agreed with your designated supervisor who is research active in your specialist area with each project equating to a ‘stage’ of the overall programme: •Stage one (60 credits): Conceptual and Theoretical Discourses •Stage two (60 credits): Contemporary Contextual Issues •Stage three (60 credits): Masters Project (Developmental Considerations)

Working with your supervisor you'll agree a timeframe from completing the MRes degree, most students complete in either one (where students are able to engage with their studies on a full-time basis) or two calendar years (running from September).

As a project based programme, students will be expected to discuss with their project supervisor, a schedule of academic tutorials appropriate to their needs. We organise a full induction day in late September / early October followed by a series of twilight advanced research methods workshops scheduled from November to May. In addition students will have access to research seminars which run throughout the academic year.
