UCL has ground-breaking courses focusing on the future of crime
UCL’s Department of Security and Crime Science delivers some of the UK’s premier courses in crime and security, including the MSc in Crime Science, the MSc in Crime and Forensic Science, the MSc in Countering Organised Crime and Terrorism and the MSc in Policing.
Recent research published by the UCL Dawes Centre for Future Crime – which is part of the UCL’s Department of Security and Crime Science – examined Artificial Intelligence-enabled future crime. This ground-breaking work not only created headlines worldwide but now forms part of the content studied in UCL’s portfolio of PG crime courses, further cementing their well-deserved popularity and excellent reputation.
The Dawes Centre for Future Crime was set up to identify emerging crime threats and was driven by the issue that technological and societal change will lead to new types of crime. Director of the Dawes Centre, Professor Shane Johnson, explains, “The past thirty years have demonstrated that paradigm shifts in technology lead inevitably to the emergence of new types of crime and offenders. We are all familiar with the rapid rise of cybercrime brought on by the ‘digital revolution’, but crime opportunities will also be presented by developments in, for example, nanotechnology, robotics, cybernetics, biohacking, cryptocurrency fraud, machine learning, and artificial intelligence (AI).”
Professor Johnson continues, “The challenge is in both forecasting the nature and spread of such crimes, and in tackling them effectively before they become established. To our knowledge we are the first research centre of this kind anywhere in the world, giving us the opportunity to set the agenda.”
UCL’s crime courses are world-renowned and great option for PG study. There are 14 scholarships available for students wishing to study one of these crime courses, and those interested in finding out more can attend an open evening in February.
