University of Surrey launches MA in Film, Animation and Digital Arts
Responding to the latest advances in moving image production technologies, the University of Surrey has created a new multidisciplinary MA in Film, Animation and Digital Arts (FADA), accepting applications for a September 2022 intake.
Creative and technological boundary lines between film, high-end television, digital animation, visual effects, videogames, and live/virtual events are being rapidly redrawn. New production technologies such as virtual production, performance capture, real-time visual effects and parameterised character animation require a new breed of multi-skilled practitioners.
The MA FADA has been developed to fulfil these needs. Students on this 12-month, project-based programme develop creative and technical skills across a range of cutting-edge creative practices, culminating in their own Final Masters Project using film, animation, 3D computer graphics, visual effects, videogames, immersive media, digital acting, mediatised theatre or any combination of these. Both specialists and generalists are welcome.
The programme is actively seeking applications from creative, talented and technically astute candidates, who can demonstrate a strong portfolio, intellectual curiosity, collaborative spirit, technical proficiency and a sense of adventure. Surrey offers state-of-the-art facilities, great workspaces and dedicated multi-disciplinary supervision from a range of faculty and external practitioners. The programme team have forged extensive connections and partnerships across the creative industries, enabling students to engage with production companies, animation studios, VFX houses, facilities providers and film studios – locally, nationally and globally.
Programme Director Jon Weinbren explains: “This is a unique future-facing programme. Our new approach to postgraduate film, animation and media production training and education provides amazing opportunities for its students to create the next generation of moving image media in an exciting, convergent and rapidly changing environment. We are designing the programme as a springboard for future directors, producers, cinematographers, animators, technical artists, creative engineers and other originators to create engaging, entertaining and edifying experiences across all media formats current and future.”
