University of Southampton appoints new Director of Chemical Engineering
The University of Southampton has appointed a new Director of Chemical Engineering to run its sustainability-focussed department.
Professor Xunli Zhang – a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Chartered Chemist (CChem) – is a leading expert in bioengineering and microsystems. Speaking about his exciting new appointment, Professor Zhang says, “It is my privilege to be leading on establishing a high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate offering in chemical engineering which fits perfectly into the wide spectrum of world-class engineering and chemistry education, research and enterprise at Southampton. The new Department of Chemical Engineering will draw on Southampton’s innovative research in areas including low carbon technology, fine chemicals, green energy and water/wastewater engineering.”
As well as the appointment of Professor Zhang, other new Chemical Engineering staff at the university include Dr Mohamed Hassan Sayed as an Associate Professor, whose research interests include work on intelligent modelling and control to optimise building energy management systems, and Dr Nuno Bimbo who has expertise in the areas of energy and sustainability. The University of Southampton is also launching a Centre of Excellence in Continuous Digital Chemical Engineering Science in 2020 – a cross-disciplinary platform for research and industrial collaborations.
The University of Southampton launched an MSc in Advanced Chemical Engineering in autumn 2019 and there are plans to launch an undergraduate program soon. The university is also building a new Chemical Engineering teaching laboratory at its Highfield Campus, which will complement the new facilities that are being installed as part of a £12 million investment in Chemistry teaching spaces.
