University of Kent graduate is the creative force behind Glastonbury’s newest venue

University of KentUniversity of Kent graduate Chris Carr is the creative force behind Glastonbury 2019’s newest venue, known as SAMULA: The Portal.

The new venue was built and designed by Lucid, a company co-directed by Chris, who graduated in 2010 with a BA (Hons) in Creative Events: Design and Production– now renamed Event and Experience Design.

Lucid say they are “addressing the negative impact of disposable design and festival infrastructure, making it their mission to lead the way in sustainable stage design”.

Chris designed a system of steel frames that can be flat-packed in storage for later reuse. The system allows Lucid to build sustainable sets, shows and stages with minimal environmental impact. It is currently in use in all Lucid’s builds including SAMULA: The Portal.

Peter Hatton, Program Director for Event and Experience Design, says, “I’m delighted to see Chris helping to make the Glastonbury experience even better for festival goers and his company based here in Kent going from strength to strength. Many of our students have gone to Glastonbury and several have written assignments, others have made interactive events about the collective festival experience. However, this is the first time we have had a ‘headliner stage designer’ at the best-known festival in the world.”
