University of Cambridge launches £1 million bursary for adults affected by Covid-19
The University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education has set up a £1 million bursary program to help adults that have been badly affected by the Coronavirus pandemic to rebuild their lives and careers by gaining qualifications.
The Cambridge Thousand Futures Bursaries are being offered by the Institute of Continuing Education (ICE), which provides accessible, affordable part-time qualifications taught by world-class academics for adults of any age. They will give 1,000 people across the UK the opportunity to study a wide range of part-time remote qualifications – including advanced diplomas – from business management and coaching to art history and creative writing. Each bursary is worth £1,000 each and will enable the adult students to enhance their employability or renew their knowledge and skills by making a substantial contribution to the tuition fees of more than 30 part-time University of Cambridge advanced diplomas, diplomas and undergraduate certificates.
Thousand Futures Bursaries are open to those affected most by the coronavirus in the UK, regardless of educational background or previous qualifications. Those eligible include all UK residents who have been furloughed as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, or those who have been made redundant from 1st April 2020 onwards. The 1.5 million people who were designated most at risk of the virus can also apply for a bursary, as can over 70-year-olds and all key workers, as defined by the government. These eligibility requirements mean that a total of over 20 million people – almost one third of the UK population – are eligible to apply.
ICE Director Dr James Gazzard explains, “Our new one-million-pound bursary program will aim to support those adults who have been most affected by Covid-19 by providing more affordable access to higher education.”
Applications for the Cambridge Thousand Futures Bursary will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis. More information can be found on the ICE website.
The bursary application closing date is Friday 31st July 2020.
