GoldsmithsMA in Television Journalism students at Goldsmiths, University of London made history in November by winning three awards at the British Journalism Training Council (BJTC) student awards – the highest number of wins for any single university.

BJTC is the biggest higher education training body for broadcast journalism in the UK – working in partnership with employers including the BBC, Sky News and Thomson Reuters. The award ceremony, which took place at BBC MediaCity in Salford, was attended by over 4,000 students from more than 40 institutions.

GoldsmithsGoldsmiths students won awards in the TV New Documentary, TV Newsday and The Steve Harris Award for Best Original Story categories.

It was the second win in a row for students winning Best TV Newsday, for a weekly program on the East London Lines website. Judges were impressed that the program “understood its viewers and delivered a strong news magazine show”.

Vicky Double, Vicky Lo-Chi Tseng and Katriona Thompson won Best TV Documentary for a film examining the role of the Catholic Church and politicians in the Irish mother and baby homes scandal. According to judges, the documentary was “really mature” and “well researched”. Meanwhile, Simisola Jolaoso received the Steve Harris Award for Best Original Story for her documentary Forensic Nurses: Fighting Sex Crimes in South Africa, which received recognition for its “moving insight” and “strong storytelling”.

Program convener Linda Lewis said: "To be shortlisted in four separate categories was a major achievement, securing the highest number of nominations of any BJTC-accredited course in the country. Then going on to win three awards, again more than any other university, is hugely impressive.”

Many of the winners have now finished their studies, and are now working for organisations such as Sky News, ITV West Country and the BBC. Discover more about postgraduate study at Goldsmiths.
